“I write for young girls of color, for girls who don’t even exist yet, so that there is something there for them when they arrive. I can only change how they live, not how they think.” -Ntozake Shange

Hello

Welcome, Fellow Black Bonnet Girls (BBG),

👋🏾 It's Kiarra —  a Black Bonnet Girl perfecting her craft through flash fiction stories showcasing the beauty and intricacies of life through the lens of Black Girls and Women.

Why BBG?

When I first fell in love with writing, I wanted to imitate what I had seen and what appeared to work — I'm not just talking about sentence structure, metaphors, and story arches, but I'm talking about narratives where main characters wake and wash their hairs within minutes, genetically inherit baby blue eyes, or have luscious silky straight hair.  In time, I realized that my best pieces of work were those that were true to my truth — the ones mimicking my reality and those around me.

So, here's to embracing our skin that never cracks, the ever-widening gaps in between our teeth, the protective cellulite around our thighs, our hair's ability to metaphorize day by day, our hourglass shape, and our trusty ole friend — the Black Bonnet that's always got our back.

I sincerely hope you enjoy what BBG has to offer.

~ Kiarra
